Information for Kids
How does this sound? Play games, make friends, work hard... then go onstage to make audiences laugh and clap.
Theatre Brigade isn't like any other class you ever took. You'll play games with other young people to learn new ways to talk, new ways to move, and new ways to express yourself.
You'll also be a member of a hardworking team. Theatre Brigade students care about their work, and everyone works together to put on a fantastic show.
- Kendra Prat, member of Portland Theatre Brigade
In Brigade you won't just work with kids just like you. You'll be in a mixed up group of kids from all different kinds of families, neighborhoods and cultures. Everyone gets along and supports each other because theatre troupes are like families.
Another thing... you'll be in charge. Well, not just you the whole Brigade. The members of Theatre Brigade (that's the kids like you) make lots of the decisions. In fact, when it's time to decide which plays to perform, it's decided by vote... but the adults don't get to vote! Just the kids.
In fact, when you go out on tour, usually performing in schools just like yours, the members of the Brigade pretty much run the show. Sure, an adult will come along... you know, to drive and stuff. But it will be actors like you making the decisions about the plays you perform. Because Theatre Brigade believes that kids are smart and strong, and can work together and make great choices. But you already knew that.
To join Theatre Brigade, you don't have to already be an actor. In fact, it's OK if you've never been on stage before. You do need to be comfortable talking in front of groups, a good listener who can follow directions, and someone who usually gets along OK with other people. Also, it's great if your mom or dad or teacher wants you to be in Brigade, but you should only try to join if it's something that YOU want to do.
